Built in a much earlier period to defend the western side of Portsmouth Harbour they were largely obsolete by the time of the great Victorian defence scheme of 1860 but they served an important purpose as the home of Submarine Mining. This volume is an additional booklet in the series of booklets describing the Victorian fortifications of Portsmouth. It concentrates on the Victorian uses of the two fortifications.

No.14 Fort Gomer and Fort Elson by David Moore

Unique in design and experimental, they were the first to use the new Polygonal System. One has been completely destroyed and the other lies hidden and in ruin. This describes the two forts in more detail than Solent Papers No.6.
